Les Lilas is a French commune situated in the département of Seine-Saint-Denis in the Île-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called Lilasiens, Lilasiennes. The motto of Les Lilas is « J'étais fleur, je suis cité ».
A little history
The settlement grew up on the bois de Romainville or bois des Boulleaux, a leisure spot for the inhabitants of eastern Paris at the beginning of the 19th century. This woodland was cleared from the 1830s onwards to build houses along the star-shaped bridle paths around the roundabout (the present-day place du Général de Gaulle). The novelist Paul de Kock acquired one in 1832. To the north, the fort de Romainville was built from 1844 to 1848 on the estate of the château of the marquise de Montesson, whose memory is preserved in the rue du château.
