A little history
The town of Noisy-le-Grand, situated on a promontory that dominates and commands the Marne valley, is a very ancient town. A legend taken up by the abbé Lebeuf holds that the Romans, once Gaul had been conquered, planted numerous walnut trees in this region, hence the name Noisy from the Latin root nux, nucis (walnut). In reality, the Romans merely passed through the region at the time of the revolt of the Gaulish peoples and did not, of course, stop to plant walnut trees. As mentioned above, it is not even certain that the etymology of the town's name has anything to do with the walnut tree.
