Leers (pronounced [lɛʁs]) is a French commune situated in the département du Nord (59) in the Hauts-de-France region. It is part of the Métropole européenne de Lille. It borders Leers-Nord in Belgium, with which it formed a single entity until 1779.
A little history
The town of Leers was built on a drained marsh. It had a patron whose coat of arms displayed four keys. The coat of arms of the four keys has today become the symbol of the town, along with its mill. The name Leers is mentioned as early as 1106.
