Le Grand-Village-Plage is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called les Grand-Villageois and les Grand-Villageoises. This small seaside resort in the south-west of the île d'Oléron, formed from the division of several hamlets of Saint-Trojan-les-Bains on 14 December 1949 (Grand-Village, Petit-Village, Les Allassins, Trillou...) extends at the foot of the forêt de Saint-Trojan, a pine forest planted in the 19th century to contain the advance of the dunes.
A little history
Before the creation of the commune of Grand-Village, the village was served by the train of the chemin de fer de l'île d'Oléron from 1904 until the cessation of service in 1935. Nevertheless the traces of the earthworks of the line are still visible, and the cycle path leading from the centre towards Saint-Trojan-les-Bains follows in particular the route of the former railway. The commune of Grand-Village was created on 14 December 1949, by detachment from the commune of Saint-Trojan-les-Bains. For a long time a sense of community had existed among the inhabitants of Grand-Village, Petit-Village, Trillou, Le Maine, Les Allassins.
