Le Cellier, the town
Le Cellier covers 36 km², lies between 2 and 85 m above sea level and had 4,051 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Le Cellier is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire. It was part of the Pays nantais, a historic land of Brittany.
A little history
According to legend, saint Méen, passing through Le Cellier on his return from Rome, is said to have killed a dragon there and established a religious settlement. The prieuré Saint-Méen is subsequently attested, destroyed at the time of the Norman invasions, and re-established in the 12th century. It appears that a river toll existed as early as the 9th century, controlled by a fortress situated on the current site of the « Folies-Siffait », later known as « Château-Guy », named after a count of Nantes and responsible for the march of Brittany. At the end of the 14th century, the seat of the toll was transferred to Champtoceaux.
