Le Cateau-Cambrésis is a French commune situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. The town's fame stems essentially from the treaties of Le Cateau-Cambrésis, which were signed there in 1559 between the sovereigns of France, England and Spain, and which brought an end to half a century of wars. The wool spinning and weaving enterprise of Charles Seydoux, created in the 19th century and closed in 1981, contributed to the commune's renown. It went as far as employing several thousand workers.
A little history
Heralded from afar by its two great bell towers, one belonging to the church and one to the belfry, the town was an important historical crossroads. In 2017, during an archaeological dig carried out for the construction of a new school complex, a remarkable Palaeolithic site was discovered. 2,300 artefacts (flints) were found there. The team from the INRAP who carried out the excavations was able to identify at least three periods of occupation, at around 112,000 to 90,000 years ago and an earlier one at around 190,000 to 180,000 years ago.
