Le Bignon, the town

Le Bignon covers 27.5 km², lies between 3 and 58 m above sea level and had 3,976 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Le Bignon is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire. The commune forms part of historic Brittany, in the Pays nantais.

A little history

A micro toponym, la Fontaine aux Fées, more officially known as la Fontaine aux Moines, has attested since the first half of the 17th century the memory of a plausible cult to the divinities of springing waters (or of the woods), a cult that may have been at the very origin of the settlement. Polished stones have been found in several locations within the commune, indicating occupation from the Neolithic period. Near the village of le Landreau, a micro-toponym, Tombelaine, perhaps refers to a Celtic tomb. The site of Silureday (formerly Silevreda) has yielded an Iron Age settlement.
