Laroque-des-Albères is a French commune situated in the south-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the commune lies within Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Tanyari, the rivière de Laroque and two other watercourses.
A little history
Traces of human occupation on the territory of the commune of Laroque date back at least to the protohistoric period. Evidence of this includes numerous polished axes as well as the Balma del Moro, described by Jean Abélanet as one of the three most beautiful and largest dolmens in the département. Laroque is mentioned for the first time in the 9th century under the name Roca Frusindi, after its owner, Frusindus. It is a former fundus of Visigothic origin.
