Lannilis (pronounced [lanilis]) is a commune in the département of Finistère, in the region of Bretagne, in France. Situated on the northern coast of the département, 25 km from Brest, its territory lies between two abers, the aber-Benoît to the south-east and the aber-Wrac'h to the north-east, which open onto the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean.
A little history
In a tumulus excavated near the town at Kéréon in 1873, a dolmen was discovered measuring 3 metres in length by 2.25 metres in width, containing various ancient objects including a cinerary vase and a bronze knife. 21 tumuli are found near the village of Castelourac. The largest, measuring 35 metres in diameter and 36 metres in height, was excavated by Paul du Châtellier and contained, among other things, a vase with four handles. A Roman road coming from Vorganium (in Plounéventer) and heading towards Tolente (in Landéda) passed to the south of Loc-Brévalaire and to the north of Lannilis. Its route follows the ridge line of the domed plateau lying between the abers Benoît and Wrac'h.
