La Tremblade (pronounced in French, [la tʁɑ̃blad]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called les Trembladais and les Trembladaises. Occupying the western tip of the presqu'île d'Arvert, this small market town of 4,543 inhabitants (2022) is established on the left bank of the estuary of the Seudre, opposite the town of Marennes-Hiers-Brouage, to which it has been connected by a bridge, the viaduc de la Seudre, since 1972.
A little history
The site of La Tremblade has been occupied since Prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous objects of daily life (scrapers and hand axes dating from the Palaeolithic, polished axes, vases and ceramic remains from the Neolithic) brought together in a room of the hôtel de ville. This part of the presqu'île d'Arvert presented a very different appearance at that time from today, forming a rocky headland battered by the waves of the ocean (pointe de Brau).
