La Roche-sur-Yon, the town

La Roche-sur-Yon covers 87.5 km², lies between 32 and 94 m above sea level and had 54,849 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

La Roche-sur-Yon is a commune in the West of France, prefecture of the département of Vendée, situated in the région of Pays de la Loire. Fed by the Yon and its tributaries, the Riallée and the Ornay (and its tributary the Soivre), La Roche-sur-Yon owes its current appearance to Napoléon Ier, who turned a small market town into a modern city, based on a regular plan in the shape of a pentagon and endowed with imposing public buildings (préfecture, hôtel de ville, théâtre, tribunal, lycée, église Saint-Louis, etc.) distributed around a vast central esplanade (place Napoléon).

A little history

Several archaeological discoveries prove that the Yonnais soil was occupied from prehistoric times (a prehistoric double-edged axe, flint tools, possibly a dolmen…). Ancient coins and objects have likewise been found, as well as the foundations of Gaulish enclosures on the banks of the Yon. During the early Middle Ages the town was under the legal authority of the important regional viguerie of Talmont. In the 11th century, Guillaume le Grand, comte de Poitiers and duc d'Aquitaine, set about reorganising the defence of the Bas-Poitou, choosing the site of Talmont as his main stronghold and La Roche-sur-Yon as his rear base, two fortresses which he entrusted to his loyal Guillaume le Chauve.
