Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is a commune in the centre-west of France, situated on the Côte de Lumière, in the département of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire region. It was created in 1967 from the unification of two communes situated on either side of the mouth of the river La Vie, Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie and Croix-de-Vie. Renowned for its large fishing port specialising notably in sardines, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has also been classified as a seaside resort since 1982.
A little history
Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie resulted from the unification in 1967 of two communes situated on either side of the mouth of the Vie, Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie and Croix-de-Vie. On the left bank, Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie, then known by the name of Sidunum, Sidum or indeed Sidonum, was established in Antiquity as a Phocaean colony. The village may be the famous Portus-Secor from which Jules César launched his conquest of the west of Gaul in the middle of the 1st century BC.
