A little history
The origin of Fontenay-le-Comte is unknown. The discovery of numerous chipped or polished flints shows that the place was inhabited from a very early date. The first settlements on the site of Fontenay-le-Comte date from Prehistory and are no doubt explained by the presence of a ford allowing the crossing of the Vendée. A route going from the south towards the north-west crosses at the point where the waters are shallowest.
