Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a commune in the west of France, situated on the Côte de Lumière, in the département of Vendée, in the Pays de la Loire region. Bordered by a long beach of eight kilometres, it is a seaside resort on the Atlantic coast that is very busy in summer.
A little history
The parish of Saint-Jean has existed since the 14th century, and the church, which dates largely from that period, is the oldest monument in the town. Before the Revolution, Saint-Jean was placed under the dominion of the lords of Bois Masson. Then, following the Wars of the Vendée, the town rose from its ruins and Napoléon Ier, by decree of 19 vendémiaire an XII (12 October 1803), established a first college there. This was abolished after ten years, having been judged unviable, and was therefore transferred to Bourbon-Vendée (today La Roche-sur-Yon).
