La Palme is a French commune located in the south-east of the département of Aude in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Narbonnais, an area comprising Narbonne and its surroundings, the massif de la Clape and the lagoonal strip of étangs. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Rieu, the ruisseau de Picassou and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The people living on this stretch of coastline were called the Élisyques, an Iberian people. An Élisyque oppidum, Pech Maho, lies a few kilometres from the villa Palmae. On 28 June 805, Charlemagne gave the village to the abbaye de Lagrasse. A cella was established, Saint Jean de la consécration or San Joan de la Palma, and managed by the monks of Lagrasse.
