La Flotte, sometimes locally known as La Flotte-en-Ré, is a commune in the South-West of France, situated on the île de Ré, in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The commune holds the label of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. It is the largest commune in area on the entire île de Ré and the second largest by population, ranking after Sainte-Marie-de-Ré but ahead of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, its centralising administrative centre.
A little history
According to the Inrap, the northern coast of the île de Ré may have served as a beaching port during Antiquity. An excavation carried out at La Flotte in 2024 brought to light evidence of exchanges with the Nordic populations of Europe during the Carolingian period. On 6 November 1627, the regiment of the Gardes françaises attacked the English troops of George Villiers duc de Buckingham, who were besieging the citadelle de Saint-Martin-de-Ré, defended by Jean du Caylar de Saint-Bonnet, marquis de Toiras. Having caused the English assault to fail, the Gardes françaises withdrew through the village of La Flotte, burning three English vessels in the port there before returning to the fort La Prée.
