La Ferté-Saint-Aubin is a French commune situated in the département du Loiret, in the région Centre-Val de Loire. It is the commune that occupies the largest surface area in the Loiret. La Ferté-Saint-Aubin was formed by the union of two villages, la Ferté to the north, and Saint-Aubin to the south.
A little history
Between 29 January and 8 February 1939, more than 2,800 Spanish refugees fleeing the collapse of the Spanish republic before the troops of Franco arrived in the Loiret. Faced with the inadequacy of the reception facilities in Orléans, 46 rural reception centres were opened, including one in La Ferté-Saint-Aubin. The refugees, essentially women and children (the men were disarmed and held in the south of France), were subjected to a strict quarantine, vaccinated, correspondence was restricted, and provisions, though of little variety and cooked in the French style, were nonetheless assured.
