La Bernerie-en-Retz is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire. The commune is part of historic Brittany, in the traditional pays of pays de Retz and in the historic pays of Pays nantais. Its inhabitants are called the Berneriens and the Berneriennes.
A little history
In its early days, the villages around la Bernerie were merely outlying settlements of the mother parish, Les Moutiers-en-Retz. From the 16th century onwards, the village of La Bernerie prospered thanks to its fishing port and its shipyards. Most of the chattes of the baie de Bourgneuf were built in these shipyards. These were boats inspired by ancient Viking vessels, with no bow or stern and a flat bottom, ideal for the Marais breton to the south. The étiers, which are large ditches in the marshes, being very narrow, when the chattes reached the end they were unable to turn around.
