Joué-sur-Erdre, in Gallo Jóae (ELG), Jouë (ABCD and MOGA) or Joueu (MOGA), is a commune in the canton of Nort-sur-Erdre, in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region, in France. The village is part of the pays d'Ancenis and sits on the border of the Mée (itself within the pays nantais and historic Brittany). It lies approximately 32.4 km north of the city of Nantes and 25 km south of Châteaubriant.

A little history

In the 9th century, in order to counter the waves of Norman invasion, a motte-and-bailey castle, the curtis alentis (or château d'Alon), was raised on the steep banks of the Erdre at the lieu-dit of Alon, to the south of the village of Joué. It consists of a round motte dominating a branch of the Erdre. At the beginning of the 13th century the châtellenie de Vioreau was referred to by the name of Joué in reference to the lord who resided there, Hervé de Joué. The château, where the families Ancenis, Chateaubriand de Dinan, Montfort-Laval, Montmorency and Bourbon Condé succeeded one another until the Revolution, was in fact one of the hunting residences of these great lords.
