Jeumont is a French border commune, situated in the canton of Maubeuge-Nord, 10 km from the chief town of the canton. It belongs to the département of Nord (59) and to the région of Hauts-de-France. It had 10,229 inhabitants at the 2018 census (Jeumontois).
A little history
Jeumont was crossed, in the time of the Roman Empire, by the military road linking Bavay to Trèves, in Germany. This road, which has disappeared from the Jeumont landscape, has vestiges at Boussois, Montignies-Saint-Christophe and also Strée. It is from this period that the name Jovis mons, meaning the mount of Jupiter, had its origins in a temple raised in honour of the God of the sky. This etymological reference is taken up by Marcel Proust at the beginning of Sodome et Gomorrhe.
