Jarnac, known in Saintongeais as Jharnat, is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is situated on the right bank of the river Charente, between Angoulême and Cognac. It is notably the birthplace of President François Mitterrand, who was buried there in 1996.
A little history
Occupation of the site has been known since the Neolithic period. The quartier des Grands Maisons was occupied before the Roman period. From Gallo-Roman Jarnac (Agernacus, or Agernacum?) there remain vestiges of pottery kilns which bear witness to the existence of a craft activity. Jarnac was also a river port on the Charente between Saintes and Angoulême during the Roman Empire.
