Jargeau is a French commune in the natural region of the Val de Loire. It is situated in the arrondissement d'Orléans, the département du Loiret in the région Centre-Val de Loire, in the canton de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, on the left bank of the Loire, opposite the commune of Saint-Denis-de-l'Hôtel. Jargeau, a Johannic town once famous for its port on the Loire, is renowned for its church, its andouille and its carnival.
A little history
Several bifaces and Mousterian flints were found on the site of the present-day commune of Jargeau in the quarry at the clos des Bouères and in the bed of the Loire. These discoveries corroborate the hypothesis of a human presence on the site during the Palaeolithic period. The site of the town, known in the Gallo-Roman period as Gargogilum, was located to the north of a bend in the Loire that has since disappeared, as evidenced by the presence of turcies. On 4 July 1411, Charles Ier d'Orléans, residing in Jargeau with his brothers, wrote a letter of challenge there to Jean sans Peur, then duc de Bourgogne.
