Ingré, the town
Ingré covers 20.8 km², lies between 103 and 133 m above sea level and had 10,062 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Ingré is a French commune situated in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Mauve de Saint Aydeux and small watercourses. Ingré had approximately 8,699 inhabitants in 2014.
A little history
Archaeological digs have revealed the first traces of habitation from the Neolithic period dating back 10,000 years before Jesus Christ, as well as Gallo-Roman remains on the site of the commune. Under the reign of Philippe Auguste, the Bishop of Chartres made Ingré one of his four great provostships, and it remained so until the French Revolution of 1789. Vines were grown there essentially to produce the celebrated vinaigre d'Orléans. The land in this region, ill-suited to great vintages, nonetheless made it possible to produce a vinegar recognised as one of the finest in France.
