Ille-sur-Têt [ij syʁ tɛt] is a French commune situated in the centre of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the commune is in the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Têt, the Boulès, the Riberette, the Gimeneill and the ruisseau de Bellàgre.
A little history
In the context of the guerre des faucheurs, 5,000 Spanish soldiers led by Juan de Garay Otañez, with cavalry and four artillery pieces coming from Perpignan, attacked the town from 23 to 29 September 1640. They were repelled by the 600 Frenchmen under George Stuart, 9e seigneur d'Aubigny. The resistance of the population and the threat of the arrival of French reinforcements discouraged the Spanish, who lifted the siege. Since 1775, the vine has been in full expansion in the Roussillon.
