Huelgoat (official name) or Le Huelgoat (common name) (pronounced [(lə) yɛlgwat]), in Breton, An Uhelgoad, is a French commune in the département of Finistère, in the région of Bretagne, in the heart of the Argoat. Huelgoat is a former chef-lieu de canton, and is also a member of Monts d'Arrée Communauté as well as the parc naturel régional d'Armorique. In 2019, the commune was awarded the label Communes du patrimoine rural de Bretagne for the richness of its architectural and landscape heritage.
A little history
A book recounts the history of the commune. Situated in the heart of the Armorique, the commune of Huelgoat has no outstanding evidence of a history from the earliest period. Very little archaeological research and excavation has taken place to shed light on the town's past, except for the camp d'Artus, excavated in 1938 by Sir Christopher Wheeler. The camp d'Artus, a Celtic oppidum of the murus gallicus type, was the most important settlement, covering 30 hectares, of the Osismes, a Gaulish people.
