Hesdin [edɛ̃] is a former French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Hesdinois. It was a commune of small area, of 90 ha, the second smallest commune in Pas-de-Calais, with a rich past and an important historical heritage, situated on the Canche, at the heart of the pays des Sept Vallées (the "poumon vert du Pas-de-Calais").
A little history
Following the death without an heir, in June 1191, of the comte de Flandre Philippe d'Alsace, Philippe Auguste took effective possession of Artois, comprising the places of Arras, Bapaume, Hesdin, Saint-Omer and Aire-sur-la-Lys, as well as suzerainty over the comtés of Boulogne, Guînes and Saint-Pol, and the Vermandois place of Péronne. In 1477, following the death of Charles le Téméraire, Hesdin returned to the French crown. King Louis XI confirmed the privileges of the town, by his lettres patentes, before arriving there on 3 April 1477. The medieval town was located on the site of the present-day Vieil-Hesdin, five kilometres further to the east.
