Hersin-Coupigny is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Hersinois. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération de Béthune-Bruay, Artois-Lys Romane.
A little history
Coupigny gave its name to a great noble family of Artois. Thibaut de Lameth, seigneur de Saint-Martin-en-Artois, in the current commune of Hersin-Coupigny, fought and met his death at the battle of Azincourt in 1415. [relevance disputed] During the First World War, troops were billeted in January 1915 at Gavion, a former village included within Hersin, and at Hersin itself, having come from Ohlain. On 1st February 1915, a review of the troops took place in the vicinity of Hersin, on the occasion of the award of the légion d'honneur. On 15th February a further ceremony of the same type took place, comprising a review of the troops, the award of the légion d'honneur, and the award of the médaille militaire.
