Herbignac is a commune in the Grand Ouest of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. It forms part of the pays de Guérande, one of the pays de Bretagne.
A little history
Around the 10th century, the seigneurial jurisdiction of Herbignac was one of the most important in the region. From that point on, the history of Herbignac became intertwined with that of the seigneurial families who owned the local château, Ranrouët. Around 1125, the lords of Assérac, descendants of Vikings who had settled in the region since the 10th century, erected a feudal motte where they took up residence after leaving their domain of Assérac. Fédor, son of Richard the first known lord of Assérac, may have been the builder of Ranrouët.
