Hazebrouck is a French commune in the département du Nord, in the Hauts-de-France region. The town, situated in French Flanders, along with its surroundings, belonged to the Comté de Flandre, the kingdom of France, the Spanish Netherlands and the Southern Netherlands. With 21,912 inhabitants in 2023, Hazebrouck is a relatively sizeable town (the 3rd largest in the arrondissement de Dunkerque and the 16th in the département du Nord).

A little history

Hazebrouck was a village in the comté de Flandre. Like many towns in Flanders, Hazebrouck had throughout the Ancien Régime to endure the ravages of wars between the Burgundian and then Spanish Netherlands and France, and in the 20th century those of two world wars. It is customary to recount that monks, at the dawn of the Christian era, during the reign of Dagobert Ier, cleared the surrounding land and drained a marshy forest. Livestock farming and cultivation were thus able to develop.
