Hautmont is a French commune situated in the département du Nord, in the Hauts-de-France region. Hautmont, like many towns in the Nord, has had an eventful history from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. It was affected by conflict during the Franco-Austrian War and severely tested by the two World Wars of the 20th century.
A little history
It is following the construction of a small oratory, dedicated to saint Waast, on a small mound situated on the right bank of the Sambre at the place known as « Mont-Aigu » that the village of Hautmont apparently took its name. Onulphe d'Hautmont, or Onulfus Altimontensis, was a Benedictine monk at the abbaye d'Hautmont, around 1050. He is known for his hagiographic work. In 643, Vincent Madelgaire, count and governor of Hainaut (born around 610 in Strépy), a member of the court of King Dagobert Ier, supported missionary activity and undertook to have a monastery built in a place called Altus Mons.
