Guéret is a French commune, the prefecture of the département of Creuse in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Having first been the capital of the county of la Marche in the Middle Ages, the town has been the chief town of the département of Creuse since 1790. Its inhabitants are called the Guérétois.
A little history
It is on the Puy-de-Gaudy, which overlooks the commune of Guéret from a height of 651 m to the south-west, that the protohistoric oppidum was established in the neighbouring commune of Sainte-Feyre. Occupied until the Middle Ages, the Oppidum du Puy de Gaudy at Sainte-Feyre is listed as a Monument Historique in part by order of 3 August 1982 and in another part classified by order of 23 December 1982, under the reference of the Base Mérimée, PA00100156. It was in the 7th century that Lantarius (Lanterius, around 670), Count of Limoges, persuaded the monk Pardulphe (who would become saint Pardoux) to join his rural estate of Waractus.
