Aubusson is a French commune situated in the département of Creuse, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The town is the sub-prefecture of the département and the chief town of the canton d'Aubusson. In terms of population, it is the third largest town in the département after Guéret and La Souterraine.
A little history
The current site of the Creuse capital of tapestry has been inhabited since at least the Gallo-Roman period. However, on the territory of the commune, the Camp des Châtres, long considered an ancient Roman camp, has been found to date back to the Gaulish era (Iron Age). Covering an area of 15 hectares, it is the second largest oppidum of the Lémovices after the oppidum de Villejoubert in the commune of Saint-Denis-des-Murs. It controls an ancient route referred to on the Cassini map under the name of chemin de Moriac.
