La Souterraine is a French commune situated in the department of la Creuse, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The inhabitants of La Souterraine are called Sostraniens. Built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa, La Souterraine has retained several remnants of its medieval fortifications, including, near the church, the porte Saint-Jean, also known as the porte de Breith or porte Notre-Dame.
A little history
Four kilometres to the east of the current town of La Souterraine, at the lieu-dit Bridiers, lies a secondary Roman settlement not yet identified but attributed to the Lémovices. Vestiges discovered in 2019 reveal that human occupation of the site dates back to the 9th century AD. Around 1017, Géraud (rendered, depending on the author, as Gérald or Gérard), comte de Crozant, vicomte de Bridiers, vassal of the duché d'Aquitaine, gave this Villa Sosterranea to the abbaye Saint-Martial de Limoges. Following this donation, construction of the church was undertaken as early as 1019. Begun in the Romanesque style, it was completed in 1220 in the Gothic style.
