Bourganeuf is a French commune situated in the département of Creuse in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bourganeuf owes its medieval creation to the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, a religious and military order created in 1104. From the 12th century until the Revolution of 1789, the Knights lived in Bourganeuf, which thus enjoyed a prosperity and a reputation that were never equalled.
A little history
Bourganeuf ("Borgon Nuòu, petit bourg neuf") owes its creation to a commandery of Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem (some say of Templars, though nothing is less certain) in the 12th century. This commandery subsequently became the seat of the grand prieuré d'Auvergne, which was transferred to Lyon in 1750 by the prior Amable de Villelume de Thianges. The enclave of Bourganeuf, at the origin of the élection de Bourganeuf in the 18th century, constituted a Poitevin territory in the midst of Limousin and Marchois lands, within the orbit of the comté de Poitou.
