Guémené-Penfao (pronounced [ge.mne.pɛ̃.fo]) is a commune in the West of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. Crossed by the Don, it is bordered to the north by the Vilaine, which forms the departmental boundary with Ille-et-Vilaine. It comprises two commune sections, Beslé-sur-Vilaine and Guénouvry, former parishes that were attached to Guémené after the French Revolution (1789), which makes it the third largest commune in Loire-Atlantique, after the new communes of Vallons-de-l'Erdre and Loireauxence.
A little history
The Pays de Guémené-Penfao was for a long time an area of Breton presence. Breton was spoken there until the 13th century, but the Gallo language appears to have been spreading from as early as the 12th century. The cadastre of the commune mentions the name of Brésihan, which Père Léon Trivière in his Histoire de Guémené Penfao considers to derive from Breiz bihan, an expression meaning little Brittany. It nevertheless seems probable that the true origin is bren sec'han, from bren (hill) and sec'han (of a dry nature).
