A little history
Despite its youth as a commune, the site of this small town was occupied very quickly, as soon as the land advanced towards the sea. After the bataille de Gravelines of 1558, the town of Gravelines was considered too vulnerable from the sea. A fortified advance post close to the sea was therefore built, at the behest of the King of Spain Philippe II. A first garrison occupied it in 1586.
