Gignac [ ʒi.ɲak] (in Occitan Ginhac [ d͡ʒi.'ɲak]) is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Hérault, the ruisseau de Gassac, the ruisseau de Lagamas, the ruisseau de l'Avenc, the ruisseau de l'Aurelle, the ruisseau de Valpudèse and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the gorges de l'Hérault) and four natural zones of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest.
A little history
Mills were given by the Bishop of Lodève Raymond Guillaume to the abbaye de Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert in 1189. A poor reading of an archive led to the belief that these were the first paper mills in France, whereas they were in fact grain mills. A Masonic lodge existed in Gignac at the end of the 18th century. During the French Revolution, the citizens of the commune gathered within the revolutionary society, named the société des amis de la constitution in December 1791. After the fall of the monarchy, it changed its name to société des sans-culottes, then société républicaine et régénérée.
