Genas [ʒəna] is a French commune situated to the east of the peri-urban belt of Lyon in the département of Rhône in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are called the Genassiens.
A little history
Graves of Gaulish soldiers have yielded iron swords and spears. Situated right in the centre of the Velin area, the town of Genas was established on a glacial moraine dating from the period of the recent Riss. The first known inhabitants would therefore have been the Velauni, members of the Allobroges tribe (sarcophagi discovered during archaeological digs at the chemin de sous les vignes attest to this), who, after a series of bloody battles, were crushed by the Romans. As a result, the future Dauphiné was included in the Roman province of Narbonnaise from -22 onwards and the Pax Romana held sway over the territory of the commune for a long time.
