Gémozac (pronounced [ʒe.mo.zak]) is a commune in South-West France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called les Gémozacais and les Gémozacaises. Situated at the heart of the champagne saintongeaise, between the Royannais and the Haute Saintonge, but strongly influenced by the urban pull of Saintes, this small town of more than 3,000 inhabitants is both a relay centre with an agricultural and viticultural vocation and a residential centre concentrating a certain number of services.
A little history
In antiquity and in the 1st century of the Christian era, at the height of Mediolanum Santonum, then capital of the civitas Santonum, the Gauls and Gallo-Romans developed the region. They are said to have begun the first land clearances from Pontes, the present-day town of Pons, a centre from which many Gallo-Roman villae gave rise to the current villages whose names end in the suffix -ac, Gémozac, Tanzac, Fléac, Pérignac, Chadenac, Mosnac, Givrezac, and so on. Although the passage of an ancient Roman road from Mediolanum Santonum, the present-day town of Saintes, to Saint-Romain-sur-Gironde is well attested at Gémozac, the town only truly grew in importance during the medieval period.
