Garat is a commune in the south-west of France, located in the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). It is a commune of the urban area of Angoulême, which experienced significant demographic growth from the 1980s onwards. Its inhabitants are known as the Garatois and the Garatoises.
A little history
Before the Revolution, Garat was made up of two parishes, Garat and Ladoux. Ladoux occupied the elevated plateau along the road to Périgueux and descended as far as the Anguienne. In the feudal era, Ladoux, Garat, Dirac, Magnac, L'Isle-d'Espagnac, Soyaux and Hurtebise were dependencies of the seigneurie of La Tranchade. Before the 12th century, this territory belonged to the abbaye de Saint-Cybard.
