A little history
Thomas de Fresnes fought and was killed at the bataille d'Azincourt in 1415. On 1st July 1716, the vicomte Jean-Jacques Desandrouin obtained the king's permission to carry out coal prospecting at Fresnes. On 3rd February 1720, Jacques Mathieu and his team of miners who had come from Charleroi discovered a seam of lean coal four feet thick (1.20 m) at a depth of 35 toises (70 m). In a single day, two full cartloads were brought back up.
