Regarding the history of the town of Fourmies in the Middle Ages, in 843, with the Traité de Verdun, the division of the Carolingian empire among the three grandsons of Charlemagne granted to Lothaire I the Middle Francia, which included the Hainaut of which the village formed part. In 855, with the Traité de Prüm, which divided Middle Francia among the three sons of Lothaire I, the Hainaut was attached to Lotharingia, which Lothaire II inherited.
