Fouras, the town
Fouras covers 9.5 km², lies between 0 and 21 m above sea level and had 4,148 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Fourasine.
Fouras ([fuʁa]) is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called les Fourasins and les Fourasines. In November 2014, the municipal council proposed that the commune be named Fouras-les-Bains. This name change was not endorsed by the Conseil d'État (2021), but the municipality uses it in its communications.
A little history
The communal territory appears to have been occupied as far back as the Neolithic period, as attested by the discovery of fragments of arrowheads and knapped flint. It is more than certain, however, that the site of Fouras saw settled occupation from the Gallo-Roman period onwards. Indeed, fragments of Gallo-Roman roof tiles and imperial coins found at various points across the commune suggest the presence of an estate or small settlement at this strategic location from the early centuries of the Christian era. A first defensive structure may have been built as early as the early Middle Ages in order to protect the shoreline from Viking and pirate incursions.
