A little history
It is on the plateau du Mélantois that the village of Faches, and its hamlet Thumesnil, were established, the two once very clearly separated by more than a kilometre of land and fields. It was in 1104 that the name "Faches" appeared for the first time, more precisely "Facis", which is said to mean "uncultivated land". More than eight hundred years were needed to form the name of this commune. Even though the railway halt (established in 1846) already bore the name of Faches-Thumesnil, the separation of the village of Faches from its hamlet Thumesnil was requested by the inhabitants of Faches in a letter addressed to the Mayor on 22 January 1899.
