Estaires (pronounced [etɛʁ], in West Flemish, Stegers, the pronunciation [stəɛʁs] is close to the pronunciation of the Romanised form Estaires) is a French commune situated in the département du Nord, in the Hauts-de-France region. The nickname given to the inhabitants is les Baudets d'Estaires. The town gave its name to a breed of chicken created in the surrounding area, the race d'Estaires.
A little history
The town stands on the site of a Gallo-Roman settlement called Minariacum, a place name appearing on the Itinéraire d'Antonin. The location corresponds to the present-day Pont d'Estaires district. The former village stood on the Roman road linking Castellum Menapiorum (Cassel) to the capital of the Atrebates, Nemetacum Atrebatum (Arras). It was a strategic position, as the Lys was at its narrowest at this point, making a crossing straightforward.
