Erquy covers 26.5 km², lies between 0 and 116 m above sea level and had 3,974 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Erquy [ɛʁki] is a commune in the département des Côtes-d'Armor, in the Bretagne region, in France. The village of Erquy occupies the head of an inlet on the côte de Penthièvre between the cap d'Erquy, a natural site acquired by the Conseil départemental des Côtes-d'Armor, and the pointe de la Houssaye, formed from the remains of a volcanic eruption. It was in this rade d'Erquy that, on 16 March 1796, a naval battle took place between English and French vessels. The port of Erquy, which shelters a fleet of around 80 trawlers, is known as the "capital" of the coquille Saint-Jacques, fished in the baie de Saint-Brieuc.
A little history
Numerous traces of Gaulish and Gallo-Roman occupation have been recorded on the territory of the commune. Bernard Tanguy indicates that the earthworks known as the Camp de César on the cap d'Erquy, which served as a seigneurial hunting reserve, are thought to be the remains of a Gaulish oppidum. The parish of Erquy arose from a division of the original Breton parish of Pléneuf. The abbaye de Saint-Aubin-des-Bois and the orders of the Templars and Hospitallers held property there.
