Enghien-les-Bains (pronounced [ɑ̃.ɡɛ̃ le bɛ̃]) is a French commune situated in the département of Val-d'Oise, in the Île-de-France region. It is located eleven kilometres north of Paris. A commune created in 1850, it is the only spa town in Île-de-France, and with its lake and its casino — the first in France by turnover and the only one within less than one hundred kilometres of the capital — this town with a distinctly residential and commercial character occupies a unique place in the northern suburbs of Paris.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, Enghien was a small lordship in the county of Hainaut, situated near Brussels, in Belgium. Marie de Luxembourg (1462–1546) inherited the fief in 1526 and brought it as a dowry upon her marriage to François de Bourbon, comte de Vendôme. It was the youngest of her grandsons, Louis Ier de Bourbon-Condé, who became the first duc d'Enghien in 1566. However, the title, which had not been registered, became extinct with him in 1569.
