Elne (Elna in Catalan) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the région of Occitanie. Historically and culturally, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Tech and the Agouille de la Mer.
A little history
Traces of habitation date back to the end of the Bronze Age. Ancient settlements have been identified by archaeologists. However, at the time of Hannibal's passage in 218 BC, it is not known whether the town was populated by Iberians or by the descendants of the Sardones mentioned by Avienus, who were one of the Celtic peoples. All that is known is that Hannibal had to go to Ruscino to negotiate with the Gaulish chiefs his passage northwards in order to travel first as far as the Rhône.
