Écoyeux [ekɔjø] is a commune in the South-West of France, located in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Écoziliens and Écoziliennes.
A little history
On 22 August 1500, Charles de Coëtivy, comte de Taillebourg and prince de Mortagne-sur-Gironde, authorised Pierre de Polignac, knight and seigneur d'Écoyeux and de Vénérand, to hold 3 annual fairs, on 8 August, 11 November and 3 February. In 1652, a plague epidemic killed 132 inhabitants (10 in January, 4 in February, 9 in March, 23 in April, 27 in May, 18 in June, 16 in July and 25 more over the last 5 months of the year). The parish priest of the time, Charles Durand, then called upon his parishioners for an act of grace in the form of a mission, which was carried out in 1653.
