Échiré covers 31 km², lies between 17 and 89 m above sea level and had 3,549 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Échiré is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the département des Deux-Sèvres in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It borders the town of Niort and forms part of the communauté d'agglomération du Niortais.
A little history
The commune of Échiré has been the subject of archaeological research work. For the final Neolithic period, the site des Loups, discovered by aerial photography carried out by Maurice Marsac, is a camp protected by two ditches resting on a dry valley and the valley of the Sèvre niortaise. Excavated by Claude Burnez with the collaboration of Marie-Claude Lagarde, one of the ditches, the one enclosing the smaller area, yielded archaeological material including pottery that can be linked to the Breton site of Kroh Kollé. The outer enclosure yielded the burial of a young woman with a baby, both individuals having died perinatally.
